DENISON, Texas — Terry Butcher dominated the field at the Central Open on Lake Texoma, outpacing his competition by almost 12 pounds on the way to his second BASS victory.
Butcher began each day by getting a quick limit cranking riprap. Then, while most of the Open anglers struggled to find a successful bite in the afternoon, he pulled off the bank to patiently fish a series of brushpiles and upgraded.
Despite the tough conditions, Butcher brought 17 pounds, 1 ounce to the scales on Day One to open up a 2-pound lead. His weight slipped slightly with windy weather on Day Two, but he still brought in one of the biggest bags with 13-9to extend his lead. His 15-14 bag slammed the door shut on the final day and included the day's big bass of 4-10. Read More |

Butcher Bummed Despite His Runaway Win |

When Terry Butcher needed help because of some mechanical problems, he got it. When he needed help in the standings in order to qualify for his first Bassmaster Classic, the assistance wasn’t quite as forthcoming.
There’s no way to describe his victory at the Lake Texoma Central Open last week other than bittersweet.
Sure, he fished “perfect,” en route to weighing 46-08 over 3 days and winning by nearly 12 pounds over Bradley Hallman. But the win wasn’t enough to secure a berth in next February’s Classic. He wound up 4th in the Central points, 2 points behind good friend Jami Fralick, who took the third and final qualifying spot. Read More |

DENISON, Texas – Bassmaster Elite Series pro Terry Butcher of Talala, Okla., claimed a bittersweet victory Saturday at the Bassmaster Central Open, the final Central Open division event of the season, weighing in five fish at 15 pounds, 14 ounces for a three-day total of 46 pounds, 8 ounces.
Along with chasing a victory in the Central Open tournament, the top pros among the 30 who made the cut for the final day were vying for a 2009 Bassmaster Classic berth and an invitation to compete in the 2009 Bassmaster Elite Series, the premier level of tournament fishing.
Butcher claimed the tournament’s top prize but missed out on qualifying for the Classic by just two points in the final Central Open division standings. Ironically, the Elite pro and good friend who loaned him a boat when motor problems plagued Butcher on the first day of the tournament, Jami Fralick of Martin, S.D., was the pro who squeaked past him to qualify for what will be Fralick’s second Classic. It would have been Butcher’s first. |

DENISON, Texas – With his Day One boat trouble behind him and bluebird conditions on a nearly cloudless Friday on Lake Texoma, Bassmaster Elite Series pro Terry Butcher of Talala, Okla., managed to maintain the lead by more than 3 pounds on Day Two of the Bassmaster Central Open, the final Central Open division event of the season. Butcher had another limit, this one weighing 13 pounds, 9 ounces.
With a two-day total of 30 pounds, 10 ounces, Butcher is ahead of Michael Burns of Plano, Texas, a pro who happens to be on the edge of qualifying for his first Bassmaster Classic. Burns’ two-day total of 27-7 put him less than a pound ahead of Charles Hammack of New Caney, Texas, in third with 26-9. Rounding out the top five among the pros are Lance Vick of Mineola, Texas, in fourth with 25-11, and Elite Series pro Brian Clark of Haltom City, Texas, in fifth with 25-6.
Coincidentally, both Butcher and Clark are former professional bull riders who now regularly compete in the Bassmaster Elite Series, BASS’ premier level of tournament fishing. |
